Abstract

This study aims to explore the traditions that have been continuously carried out by scholars, from the mutaqaddimîn generation, mutaakhirîn to the contemporary generation (hadîtsiyyah) in the present. Their study of hadith is never separated from two things; dirâyah and riwâyah. The study of hadith from the dirayah side is a study of the origins of why and how the hadith emerged. it is clear that the purpose of hadith criticism – both matan and sanad – carried out by previous scholars is to maintain the validity of the hadith itself from other elements that are not hadith. So that terms appear such as authentic hadith, dhaif hadith, hasan hadith and maudhu hadith. In a sense, there are hadiths that are truly hadiths and can be justified scientifically, and there are even hadiths that actually cannot be called hadiths (psudou-hadith, maudhu '). Such categorization is the result of hadith criticism carried out by scholars throughout history. This paper results in at least we can conclude that the target of their criticism is on the sources, sanad, matan and hadiths that are ahad. Of course, this criticism cannot be accepted and justified scientifically, considering that there are several problems that must be rectified when the activities of hadith criticism from a secular perspective are carried out. In this context, the critique was carried out by the orientalists and their followers as already explained.
